Nishkama Karma Foundation was established in memory of our grandfather Dr VRK Raju, a philanthropist who believed ‘seva’ and ‘Shiksha’ as an integral part of life. At Nishkama Karma Foundation, we harness individual potential to bring about positive change in the society. Our services result in tangible changes via empathy-led, innovative solutions. Join us in our mission to craft a future that is more equitable and compassionate.
With an Indian population of nearly 141 crores (1.4 billion), there is a huge unmet need to serve the underprivileged people across the country. Nearly 1.87 lakh NGOs in India are offering various services. However, there is a significant portion of needy people that are untouched by the existing network of NGOs. This gap is growing day by day and we believe every one of us are responsible to serve those in need.
⇒ Rural communities in India suffer from a significant lack of access to healthcare. This lack of access
results in high rates of maternal mortality, infant mortality, and malnutrition, as well as low life
expectancy and low vaccination rates.
⇒ More than 60% of rural Indians with major diseases choose to leave their state to access treatment.
⇒
Each year, nearly 15 lakh people die due to poor quality of healthcare system.
⇒ India has nearly 197.3 million (19.7 crore) persons with mental disorders; stigmatization & financial
barriers prevent timely treatment.
⇒ It is alarming to know that India is the world's suicide capital with over 2.6 lakh cases of suicide
in a year.
⇒ 70-92% fail to receive any treatment.
⇒ 0.3 mental health outpatient services per 100,000 people.
⇒ 0.04 psychologists and 0.30 psychiatrists per 100,000 people.
⇒ 0.8 beds per 100,000 people.
⇒ Nearly 189 million (18.9 crore) undernourished population in India. The homeless population
is particularly vulnerable among the total undernourished population since they are mostly invisible
in the policy process.
⇒ More than 2 million homelessness people in India, with the majority of them living in urban
areas. Only 18% homeless population has claimed to receive subsidized food from public distribution
systems and the remaining 82% barely have one meal per day.
⇒ Cows hold immense cultural, religious, and economic significance in India, often regarded as
sacred beings. There are more than 5 million stray cattle roaming the streets of India with most of
them in bad condition – either starving or injured after getting hit by vehicles.
⇒ Although, there are more than 5,000 gaushalas across India, there is a significant gap to
address the issue. Offering food, veterinary services and medical assistance can be an invaluable way
to help.
